The commonality concept Flight Deck system are the same across all Airbus aircraft since all Airbus aircraft production today features the same cockpit layout.

Even all the system controls and even the aircraft  handling procedures and qualities are the same. This is a very interesting commonality concept that brings more advantages to pilots and airlines.

Let me tell you that Airbus has prioritised commonality throughout its diverse product line since the creation of their first aircraft.

The commonality concept was taken to a new level in the 1980s with Airbus’ first single-aisle aircraft, the A320, and the introduction of digital fly-by-wire controls. Identical cockpits and operating procedures were applied to each of the A320 Family’s versions – the A318, A319, A320 and A321 – allowing pilots to fly all these aircraft with a single type rating.

Nowadays Airbus passenger aircraft (the single-aisle A220 and A320; twin-engine A330 (including its A330-900 and A330-800 variants; new-generation A350 XWB wide-body and double-deck A380) feature nearly identical flight decks and similar handling characteristics.


What is the advantages of  commonality concept Flight Deck system ?


1) Advantage for Airline -: 

Reduce Maintenance manhour cost -:

In terms of maintenance operating  A320s,  A321s and  A319s is the same as operating a single type.  The savings are enormous, common equipment, common staff. For cabin crew, the cabin is a just a little longer or shorter. For pilots the aircraft are virtually the same.  They react in the same way to the same commands. 

This is true of all Airbus Industry new generation aircraft from the  A319 to the four engine  A340. The simulator is common to the whole family. Basic crew conversion costs are therefore much lower for airlines, which base their fleets on Airbus technology.

Because the crews can be used on different aircraft, operations are more flexible and efficient.

Designing a 192/200 seater based on the  A320 was a natural step. 

The cost effectiveness of the idea is even clearer in market forecast. The advent of the  A319 is perhaps even more inhibitive.

Now airlines can adapt a slack operating periods and expand their commercial networks to second relines while keeping the fleet effect. The  A319 opens up development perspectives for smaller airlines too by providing them now with a high quality aircraft that would go on being attractive. By founding the first real family of aircraft,  Airbus Industry has created a novel concept based on standardization and maximum commonality. 


2) Advantage For Engineers -: 

This is main important factor that impact on the main body of airline supposed if any airline is having same type fleet and same type cockpit layout so it is too easy for any engineer for maintenance and along with for his license Authorization also .

Second thing it is easy for his authorization course .So holding a License for same aircraft is very helpful for both engineer as well as airline also.If an airline purchases the same type of aircraft, then they benefit immensely.As I mentioned above. Secondly, buying the same type of aircraft saves the maintenance costs. For example, if there is a defect in the cockpit of an aircraft, it can be replaced easily and in a short time.And this saves a lot of time. 

And also it is very easy for the engineer to work.  He can do any work very easily and quickly. Before a long time in Aviation has many airlines that follow the this system.

The whole family has the same man machine interface. 

The Primary Flight Display alone replaces six conventional electromagnetic instruments. Information is displayed on a six cathode ray tubes when it is needed, thus reducing the crew’s workload. A major asset of computer-aided design is ease of access to system operation parameters. 

This is an advantage for the Centralized Fault Display System (CFDS), the key to maintenance guidance. Any failure is analyzed, the faulty component identified, the diagnosis made, and if necessary the information is transmitted to the ground in real time for time saving repair.

The  A320 family ties really come into their own when it comes to maintenance.  Virtually all despairs, test devices and procedures are identical.

No need for extra stocks or special training or facilities in service staff are available for the whole family.


3) Advantages for pilots -:

 Just like Aircraft maintenance Engineer for pilot also this system is applied.

Because these people are also subject to that things and they all  are also need a mixed fleet authority.As we have seen that the  Airbus commonality enables Mixed Fleet Flying, this is a pilot’s ability or airlines responsibility to be current on more than one Airbus fly-by-wire aircraft type at a time.

This means that an A320 Family-qualified pilot can step onto any of the four aircraft at any time – allowing airlines with multiple aircraft family versions to schedule the aircraft best matched to passenger bookings of a specific route on any day, with a range of seating options from 100 to 240 passengers.

All of this leads to lower training costs for airlines and considerably increased crew productivity.it is amore economical for an airline to recruit new pilots who already are Airbus-qualified. Airlines save hundreds of thousands of euros (per aircraft) for pilot training.
